DESIGNING AN INTERACTIVE HISTORY MOBILE GAME

Similar to its predecessors, Battlefield 1 is a first-person shooter game that emphasizes teamwork. It is set in the period of World War I, and is inspired by historical events. Players can make use of World War I weapons, including bolt-action riflesautomatic and semi-automatic riflesartilleryflamethrowers, and mustard gas to combat opponents.*

My team wanted to create a method to get passionate gamers to engage with the historical thematic events from BATTLEFIELD 1 away from their consoles/PC and engage here in the their real world at any given time.

OPPORTUNITIES

RESTART SECURITY BLANKET

Games have always seemed to have a common element of the respawns or additional lives. Giving a player the option to try again, with the opportunity to learn from their mistakes if their first attempt fails.

TIMING IS ALWAYS IN PLAY

BATTLEFIELD 1 has many game modes, whose time lengths range from 5 - 10 minutes, and with the new addition of Operations,  which spans over several different maps in a mini-multiplayer length campaign, can last upwards of 45 mins.

THE POWER OF STORY

The BATTLEFIELD games are known for their immersive storytelling, excelling at creating deep attachments to specific characters for players. The developers gave players an opportunity to play only a handful of characters and their stories. What about all the other stories of soldiers that haven't been told, and how can we help developers tell them?

NOT JUST FOR THE ARDENT

The BATTLEFIELD  games have a huge community following with the ardent gamers, but what about everybody else? By taking the BATTLEFIELD  story world away from the console and PCs and using mobile platforms perhaps it can bring interest and create a bigger following by appealing to non-gamers and ardent gamers alike.

Narrative Scenarios

Meuse-Argonne Offensive: This offensive follows the United States and German Empire during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918, where nearly 1.2 million American soldiers engaged the Germans with help from French armor.  You’re cast as a “Doughboy”(fresh soldier/little or no time in combat as of yet) U.S. soldier working through the Argonne Forest and miles of the German’s heavily fortified trenches and underground bunkers along the way to capture the railway hub at Sedan which would break the railway network supporting the German Army in France and Flanders
